Goris
Nestled in the north-eastern part of the Syunik province, in a valley with a streaming river is a small town known as Goris. Derived from the Indo-European prelanguage words, “Gor” translates to “rock,” referencing the stunning rocky mountainous landscape it rests on, complete with volcanic pillars and grass slopes.
Dating back to the Stone Age, the first settlers of Goris inhabited the lands and did much great work to the region right away, beginning with the building of their many churches. Serving as a hub for the regional community, the churches in Goris have doubled as both a place for protection and a place for worship for the Armenian people.
